Free Tree Removal: What's Real and What's Wishful

Some trees genuinely come down free. Most don't. Here's the honest map — and every real way to cut the bill.

Serving Huntsville, New Waverly, Willis, Trinity, Madisonville, Riverside & the Lake Livingston side.

Short answer: genuinely free removal exists in exactly four cases — utility-line trees (Entergy/SHECO handle trees threatening their lines), post-disaster debris programs (after declared disasters like Beryl, Walker County ran debris pickup for storm-downed trees), timber with sale value (a stand of mature pines, not one yard tree), and practice trees for line-clearance training crews (rare, don't plan on it). Everything else costs money — but less than you might think if you're flexible.

Ways to actually cut the cost

  • Book winter: Dec–Feb pricing routinely beats storm-season by 30%+ (see the timing guide).
  • Bundle: one mobilization, several trees/stumps — the per-item price drops every time.
  • Skip the haul: if you can use the wood (firewood, mill logs) or the chips (mulch), keep them and save the disposal share. In burn-ban country the haul is real money.
  • Leave the stump for later if the budget is tight this month — grinding is a standalone visit anytime (costs here).
  • Seniors and fixed incomes: no formal free program exists locally, but say so when you call — honest crews (ours included) will structure the job to what actually must happen now vs. what can wait.

The "free removal for the wood" myth

One backyard pine is not a timber sale — loggers need volume and access. Anyone offering "free removal, we keep the wood" on a single tree either isn't insured or is making it up on the invoice. If a deal needs your tree to be secretly valuable, it isn't one.

Tight budget and a tree that scares you? Call (936) 755-5174 and say exactly that. Triage is free: what must come down now, what can wait for winter prices, and what's actually fine.
